For flexible use in the food industry

Classic starch, produced from corn, wheat or potatoes, is used in the food industry, among other things, to bind sauces and for cake batter, fruit preparations or confectionery. However, a large number of other products and ingredients are also manufactured from the vegetable raw materials, for example starch-based sugars. Depending on the processing, these products have special properties that are of particular benefit to food manufacturers in the areas of infant nutrition, sports nutrition, baked goods and confectionery, convenience and frozen products, and beverages. They add volume, keep products soft, improve consistency and shelf life, maintain gloss and reduce the tendency to crystallize. For all processing steps in which powdered starch or its derivatives have to be stored, transported, dosed or prepared, Zeppelin is able to offer a process engineering solution.

THE PROCESS STEPS FOR STARCH PROCESSING

Many process steps are necessary for the processing of starch. This starts with the storage of raw materials but also of end products such as dextrins and modified starches in silos and big bags with the corresponding feeding and discharging systems. This is followed by systems for pneumatic conveying and handling of the ingredients up to systems for the downstream processes. Of course, service and automation of the plants are also part of the offer.

Product specific conveying

Product-specific conveying is of decisive importance for an optimal end result. Zeppelin has various conveying systems for transporting abrasive or fracture-sensitive bulk materials, such as those found in the starch industry with agglomerated starches or special proteins. We always use the most suitable conveying method. Techniques such as air conveying in positive and negative pressure operation through to protective gas-superimposed pneumatics or secondary air conveying and plug conveying are used.

Discharge of bulk materials

For the discharge of bulk materials difficult to handle and/or bridge-forming bulk materials, Zeppelin has developed components that can be ideally used for starches and their derivatives. Vibratory bottoms and hoppers as well as fluidized bed systems facilitate product conveying within a silo. Fluidized beds are suitable for fluidizable bulk materials. For this purpose, air is fed through a semi-permeable fluidized bed.

Homogeneous mixing results

Fluidized beds made of polyethylene (PE) or stainless steel are also used for homogenization. Homogenizing silos with sintered fluidized bed materials, as used by Zeppelin, are very well suited for this purpose. Large flakes are preserved. The homogenizing silos have a very good mixing behaviour and also cope well with larger batches. Depending on the bulk density, these silos can hold up to 60 tons of starch products. Whereas the temperature resistance of a PE fluidized bed is up to 70°C, the temperature resistance of stainless steel is much higher.

Know how in dosing and mixing

When it comes to accuracy, we are in our element. From batch weighing components to differential dosing scales including controls, you get everything from a single source. Zeppelin has fully automatic minor component plants or medium component plants up to high capacity weighing plants for the dosing of flowing dry materials and dry materials difficult to handle.

Moistening and coating protects starch flakes

The DymoMix™ (Dynamic Moisture Mixing System), which was originally developed for bread dough, also plays to its strengths in starch processing. The DymoMix™ wetting system works as a pre-mixer and is used as a supplementary production step between batching and further processing steps. The special feature is that powdered components are wetted with water or oil and a homogeneous mixture is created immediately.

Continuous further processing

Zeppelin uses the Codos NT continuous kneader for processing proteins into meat substitute products. The kneader mixes the various recipe ingredients such as powdered raw materials (e.g. gluten, potato and pea proteins) with water and oil and kneads them into a dough with high energy input.
